Apple is opening its office apps to AI agents that it does not control. The company announced on October 27, 2026 that Keynote, Pages and Numbers will gain a new intelligent assistant in beta — built on Apple models and OpenAI — and, more consequentially, Model Context Protocol (MCP) support that lets external AI agents and tools read content, perform edits and execute automated actions directly in all three apps. The changes arrive as part of a broader Apple Creator Studio update coming to the App Store in November.

The headline for most users will be the assistant. It understands document context, Apple says, so help stays inside the work rather than in a separate chat window. But the MCP move is the one that changes the competitive shape of the suite: instead of AI help coming only from Apple, the agents people already use — from any company — will be able to work directly inside Apple's documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

The assistants, app by app#

In Keynote, the assistant helps with designing, animating and refining slides. In Pages, it drafts, restructures and fine-tunes written content. In Numbers, it calculates, visualizes and organizes data, recommends suitable chart types with a one-tap preview, and builds custom tables using world knowledge. Apple describes all three as the same assistant platform, tuned to each app's document type.

Logic Pro for Mac gets its own version of the assistant, also in beta and also built on Apple models and OpenAI. It helps creators navigate production workflows, start a new song, set up a vocal track from a single prompt, or refine an active project. Logic Pro also gains a redesigned Browser powered by on-device music understanding, and a Stem Splitter that can now isolate, replace or rebalance drum parts without the original multitracks.

Why MCP is the bigger move#

MCP is the open protocol that lets AI applications connect to outside tools and data sources. By supporting it in Pages, Keynote and Numbers, Apple is effectively making its file formats agent-addressable: an external agent can open a document, change it and carry out a workflow, rather than the user copying text back and forth between an app and a chatbot. Apple pairs that with a second opening: Keynote gains support for the Keynote Interchange Format (.keyx), an open JSON-based bundle format designed to be readable and accessible to external tools, developer workflows and AI agents.

That matters because Apple's office apps have trailed Microsoft 365 Copilot and Gemini in Google Workspace on built-in AI. Apple is closing that gap partly with OpenAI's help rather than on its own models alone — and, with MCP, it is also conceding that the winning agent for a given user might not be Apple's. The open question Apple has not answered in this announcement is which external agents will be first to ship support, or what permission controls will govern what an agent can change.

The rest of the update#

The Creator Studio update is much wider than the office apps. Final Cut Pro for Mac now integrates MotionVFX directly, giving editors access to thousands of effects, plug-ins, transitions, templates and motion graphics tools, plus rotoscoping, tracking and color grading. Apple's curated Content Hub now includes video assets and is available in Final Cut Pro, and across Keynote, Pages and Numbers it adds stock video, new premium themes and templates.

Pixelmator Pro introduces Generate Fill, which lets creators circle an area of an image and describe the change they want in natural language. Apple says it automatically matches the lighting, perspective and texture of the surroundings, and built-in Super Resolution upscales the generated content so it stays sharp at any size.

Availability, price and limits#

The updates arrive on the App Store in November as a free update for existing Apple Creator Studio subscribers. Apple has not named a November date. New subscribers in Canada pay $17.99 per month or $179 per year, with a one-month free trial, and education pricing of $3.99 per month or $39 per year. The free versions of Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform continue to be available — the assistants are a subscriber feature.

There are sharp limits at launch. The assistants are in beta and available in U.S. English only, and they require an Apple Intelligence-capable device running iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 or later. MCP support is narrower still: it requires macOS 27 or later, so on day one the external-agent story is Mac-only. The Logic Pro assistant is likewise Mac-only, requiring macOS 27 on an Apple Intelligence-capable Mac.

Apple's senior director of Worldwide Product Marketing for Apps and iCloud, Brent Chiu-Watson, called it the suite's most exciting update since its launch, saying “the assistant capabilities in Logic Pro, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are going to change the game for how people interact with and learn to use these apps.” Whether that holds will depend on the November release itself — and on whether outside agents actually show up in Apple's documents, or whether MCP support stays a checkbox.

Frequently asked questions

What did Apple announce for Pages, Keynote and Numbers?

What does MCP support let outside agents do?

MCP support lets an external AI agent read a document's content, make edits and carry out automated actions directly in Keynote, Pages and Numbers on a Mac running macOS 27 or later, instead of the user copying text between the app and a chatbot.

When can I get the update, and what do I need?

The Creator Studio updates arrive on the App Store in November as a free update for existing subscribers. The assistants are in beta, in U.S. English only, and require an Apple Intelligence-capable device running iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 or later; MCP support requires macOS 27 or later.
