Ranking on Google used to be the whole game. In 2026, half the battle is getting cited — by AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. The SEO tooling market noticed: every serious content-optimization platform now ships AI-visibility tracking next to its keyword scores.

We lined up five of them — Surfer SEO, Clearscope, Frase, MarketMuse, and Semrush — and compared them on what actually matters in 2026: how they optimize content, whether they track AI answers, and what they cost.

How we compared#

Four criteria, applied evenly:

  • Content optimization depth — live scoring while you write, briefs, and audits of existing pages.
  • AI-answer tracking — which engines it monitors (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, AI Overviews) and at what granularity.
  • Workflow — integrations, publishing, and how much of the loop it automates.
  • Entry cost — verified from each vendor's current pricing page. Prices move fast in this market; treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.

This is a feature-and-pricing comparison drawn from each product's public pages — not a hands-on lab test. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.

Surfer SEO: the on-page standard, rebuilt for AI answers#

Surfer SEO invented the Content Score — the live 0–100 grade that tells writers, as they type, how their draft stacks up against what's already ranking. In 2026 the company repositioned the whole platform as an "AI visibility platform": alongside the classic editor, audit, and SERP analyzer, it now tracks what AI models say about your brand and shows whether you appear in Google AI Overviews.

The workflow is a closed loop: audit flags underperforming pages with a prioritized fix list, the editor gives live guidelines while you draft, and always-on monitoring alerts you the moment a page slips or a competitor takes a query. Brand-voice settings keep AI-assisted drafts from sounding generic, and a Surfer MCP connector plugs the research-and-optimize loop into your existing stack. A "Surfy Agent" that writes and publishes at scale is announced but still marked as coming soon.

Best for: in-house content teams and agencies that publish every week and will actually follow the editor. Pricing: Surfer doesn't show prices on its homepage — check the current pricing page, since the plan structure changed in 2026.

Clearscope: the editor writers actually enjoy#

Clearscope is the minimalist of the group: a writing editor with real-time term suggestions and a live content grade, plus query discovery, search-intent analysis, and content analytics that protect pages you've already published. Its customer list — IBM, Webflow, Adobe, Animalz — is the strongest social proof here.

On the AI side, every plan includes prompt tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini (watching when and how your brand gets mentioned), brand-visibility tracking across search and AI systems, and "query fan-out" data showing which web searches AI platforms run to build their answers. Pricing is refreshingly simple: Essentials at $129/month (50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations, 20 drafts), Business at $399/month, Enterprise custom — with unlimited users and projects and no contracts on every tier.

Best for: teams that want the least-friction editor and don't mind the steepest entry price. The $129 floor is real; this is not a solo-blogger tool.

Frase: the budget pick that does the most#

Frase runs the widest workflow for the lowest price. It audits your site page by page, scores each page for both search and AI answers, ranks the fixes by payoff, then drafts them in a brand voice learned from your own site. Its Content Guard watches published pages for ranking decay and drafts the fix for your approval — you can opt in to let it apply low-risk fixes on its own.

AI-visibility tracking covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI on a daily cadence. It publishes into WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, or Wix (or its own agent-ready Frase CMS), and an MCP server plus CLI on every plan means your own coding agent can drive it. Frase claims 4.8/5 across G2 and Capterra from 500+ reviews.

Best for: solo bloggers and small teams. Pricing: $39/month on annual billing ($49 month-to-month) for one site and one person; Professional is $103/month annual ($129 monthly). A 7-day free trial needs no credit card. Nothing else here gives you this much under fifty dollars.

MarketMuse: the strategist's heavy artillery#

MarketMuse plays a different game from the editors above: strategy, not sentences. Its patented AI analyzes your entire content inventory, maps your topical authority, finds competitor gaps, and scores each topic by personalized difficulty — then hands you a content plan showing what to create or update, in priority order. The Optimize app grades drafts on structure, expertise, and depth, adds link recommendations, and runs quality analysis.

Notably, MarketMuse is explicit that it does not write content for you — its generative AI helps you create faster inside Optimize, but the product's job is telling you what to write and why. It also doesn't advertise AI-citation tracking, which is a gap next to the others here. Best for: publishers and enterprises planning content at the topic-cluster level, where the question is what to publish, not how to phrase it. Pricing: premium paid tiers — check the current pricing page.

Semrush: the all-in-one when SEO is the whole job#

Semrush is the only tool here that isn't just a content optimizer. It's a full SEO suite: 28 billion keywords, 43 trillion backlinks, 808 million domain profiles, and 142 geo databases, plus site audits, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and competitor research. The content toolkit — topic ideas plus AI tools that score and optimize in real time — sits inside that larger machine, and the AI visibility toolkit tracks prompt-level mentions across a claimed 317 million-plus LLM prompts.

Beyond SEO it bundles PPC research, social media, local SEO, and PR toolkits — genuinely one subscription instead of four. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush in 2026, which is worth knowing if vendor stability matters to you. Best for: teams where SEO is a whole function, not just a writing workflow — the only pick here that also does keyword research, technical audits, and link building. Pricing: tiered paid plans — check the current pricing page.

Takeaway: which one should you buy?#

  • Tight budget, solo operation: Frase. $39/month gets you audit, drafting, AI-answer tracking, and publishing — the best value on this list by a distance.
  • Content team shipping weekly: Surfer SEO for the Content Score plus the audit loop, or Clearscope if you want the cleanest editor and unlimited seats — at a $129/month entry fee.
  • Enterprise planning: MarketMuse, for inventory-level strategy the editors can't do.
  • SEO as a whole function: Semrush, the only one here with keyword research, audits, backlinks, and PPC under one roof.

One honest caveat before you buy any of them: no optimizer manufactures authority. These tools make sure a good page gets its best shot at ranking — and now, at being cited by AI answers. The pages that win still start with reporting, data, or experience nobody else has. Buy the tool that fits your workflow; supply the substance yourself.
