- When: October 19, 2026, announced via press release from Pasadena, California.
- Scale: 17 million sources analyzed; 36 million raw concepts generated; 1.2 million ideas published; roughly 100,000 potentially harmful ideas removed.

- Ambition: Catalyze 1,000,000 new businesses and 100,000,000 jobs; connect founders with $100 million in potential funding.
- Partners: Cloudflare — $100,000 in credits per startup and 12 functions in the 118-function Periodic Table of Business Functions; plus ASU, Caltech, Imperial College London, GEN (200 countries), RAISE US, Mercury, Endeavor, Janngo, and Flat6Labs. Bill Gross, the serial entrepreneur behind more than 175 companies and founder of the Idealab incubator, on Monday announced Idealab.ai, a free platform that applies AI to his 31 company-building methods to generate business ideas — launching with more than 1.2 million of them searchable at no cost. His stated ambition: help catalyze one million new businesses and 100 million new jobs.
At a moment when AI is mostly framed as a threat to jobs, Gross is betting it can do the opposite: lower the barriers to entrepreneurship so more people start companies that solve real problems. “We want to give those ideas away and help people build them — to use AI not just to increase productivity, but to create companies, livelihoods, jobs, solutions, and hope,” he said in the announcement.
From 36 million concepts to 1.2 million ideas
The project began, Gross says, with a simple observation: almost every business article contains an ingredient of business creation — a problem to solve, a capability that enables solutions, or a landscape shift creating a window of opportunity. He wondered whether his own three-decade process for spotting businesses could be made explicit, automated, and run continuously at machine scale.
The answer: a system that analyzes sources — more than 17 million of them, spanning news, research, patents, public filings, and community discussions — and infers three ingredients of business creation: opportunities (problems, friction, unmet needs), enablers (technologies, advances, changing cost curves), and shifts (regulatory, behavioral, economic, cultural, and geopolitical changes that open timing windows).
AI applied Gross’s 31 idea-generation methods to that corpus, and according to the announcement, “it outperformed what he had long considered his superpower.” The system generated 36 million raw concepts; 1.2 million made the cut and are now searchable, filterable, and free, each with an idea brief and scoring against indicators like urgency of need, technology readiness, market viability, and competitive whitespace. Gross also removed roughly 100,000 potentially harmful concepts from the platform, Fortune reported.

The Periodic Table of Business Functions — and Cloudflare’s $100K
Finding an idea is only step one, and Gross knows it. Behind the discovery experience, Idealab.ai is building what it calls the Periodic Table of Business Functions — a framework mapping the 118 core functions of building and operating a company, from customer discovery to legal — that will eventually power a conversational company-building environment recommending next steps.
Cloudflare is the first partner for that framework: through the partnership, startups built via Idealab.ai get $100,000 in Cloudflare credits, and 12 Cloudflare-powered functions are integrated into the table. The partnership will be highlighted at Cloudflare Connect on October 20. Mercury, the startup-focused fintech, is also joining to give founders the financial infrastructure to receive investment and invoice clients.
A global rollout through universities and networks
The launch comes with a sprawling list of collaborators. Arizona State University will give all its students worldwide access and run a showcase of the top 10 businesses built from platform ideas; Caltech is folding the system into its expanding entrepreneurship programs; Imperial College London gets a private instance of the idea engine for its own research plus student access to the functions framework and pitch competitions.
The Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), which operates in 200 countries, plus Endeavor, Janngo, and Flat6Labs are introducing the platform to founders across their networks; RAISE US is working with states and community business leaders on workforce access. Gross also set a funding goal: help connect founders around the world with $100 million in potential funding, with applications opening as resources come online.

The human stays in charge
Gross is emphatic that the AI generates ideas while people build companies. “Every business decision is still made by the human,” he told FounderBrew. “Think of the human as the master operator, decision-maker of the whole business, but think of what we’re building for you: our tools to make the mechanics work without you having to know those details.”
He also named the pitfalls the platform can’t fix: founders choosing ideas that don’t solve a real problem, and bad timing — which he has long argued matters more than the idea or the execution. The platform ships a “timing technology model score” that tries to measure whether the world is ready for an idea, based on news content.
Skeptics will note the obvious: an idea database doesn’t make companies. Generating ideas is one part of a brutally hard process, and nobody knows whether AI-assisted idea generation will offset the jobs AI destroys. Gross’s counter, from the announcement: “AI does not build companies; people do.” Beginning today, Idealab.ai is open for anyone to search the ideas and try to become one of those people.
