HSBC launches HSBCnio: your bank account plugs into your AI tools via MCP
HSBC's new HSBCnio platform embeds transaction banking — accounts, payments, FX, trade — directly into the systems clients already use, and lets their own AI tools query banking data through HSBC's Model Context Protocol.

HSBC has launched HSBCnio, a new digital platform for corporate and institutional clients that does something the banking industry has talked about for years: it puts the bank's services, data, and intelligence directly into the channels, platforms, and workflows where clients actually run their businesses. And, crucially, into their AI tools.
The centerpiece for AI watchers is HSBC's Model Context Protocol. Through it, a client's own AI agents can query authorized account and transaction information — securely, under existing permissions — instead of a person logging into a portal and copy-pasting numbers. Treasury teams can ask an AI to find and interpret banking data inside their own workflows; HSBC's product page confirms the same protocol will also power "Ask HSBC," an AI agent that turns questions about accounts and payments into actions.

Three ways to bank, none of them a portal#
HSBCnio offers three modes of engagement: a simplified web and mobile experience showing cash positions, transactions, trade loans, and FX activity; embedded connectivity through APIs that bring banking directly into a client's own platforms; and the AI-enabled interfaces described above. To cut integration friction, HSBC is shipping API documentation, software development kits, and a dedicated sandbox so developers can test before going live.
"HSBCnio is designed around the way our clients run their businesses, giving them one digital solution with multiple ways to bank based on their preferences," said Amber Henderson-Smart, HSBC's Global Head of Client Connectivity. She added that "AI is core to the design of HSBCnio and supports HSBC's ambition to build a bank for the future by embedding AI solutions that benefit our clients."

Agentic banking arrives at the treasury desk#
The launch is the clearest signal yet that agentic AI has reached corporate treasury. Instead of building yet another destination app, a bank with roughly $3.4 trillion in assets is betting that connectivity is the product — that corporate clients want banking data living inside their ERP systems and AI agents, not the other way around. That puts pressure on mid-tier banks without the capital to build AI-ready data layers and permissioned API sandboxes.
It also fits a pattern. This month alone HSBC rolled out AI-powered Smart Checking for trade finance documentation and integrated Nasdaq Calypso to modernize its global exchange-traded-derivatives clearing. HSBCnio, with its Context Protocol at the center, is the next step: the agent, not the login screen, as the interface to the bank.
What to watch#
Availability and features will vary by market and client configuration, per HSBC. The questions that matter now: how quickly "Ask HSBC" moves from coming soon to generally available; which third-party AI stacks get built on the MCP layer first; and whether rival global banks answer with their own agentic platforms or keep selling portals. For now, one of the world's largest banks has made its position official: the future of corporate banking is a protocol, not a website.
