Mistral launches 'Le Chonk': a 1.05T-parameter open-weight model aimed at China's best — weights land October 27

Mistral announced Mistral Large 4 — codename "Le Chonk" — on Tuesday, a 1.05-trillion-parameter open-weight model its CEO says beats Chinese open models on some measures "including cyber". The model is in public preview via API starting today; the weights go fully public on October 27.

Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch unveiled the model at a conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, telling the audience that Large 4 beats Chinese open-weight models on some aspects, "including cyber", without giving details, Reuters reported. Pierre Stock, Mistral's vice president of science, told Reuters it ranked among the best open-weight options. It is the Paris-based lab's first new model since May — and its most direct shot yet at the Chinese labs that have been setting the pace in open weights all year.

Mistral's own documentation page, dated October 6, 2026 and labeled "Public Preview v26.10", describes Large 4 as a state-of-the-art, open-weight, general-purpose multimodal model built on a granular Mixture-of-Experts architecture: 49 billion active parameters out of 1.05 trillion total, a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder, and a 1-million-token context window. It ships with the full platform surface — structured outputs, function calling, document QnA, agents and conversations, and built-in tools. Mistral says the model is "closing the gap with frontier models" on coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing, and product design.

Cyber experts get an unfiltered preview

The rollout has a security-shaped twist. In a preview period, some cybersecurity experts and state authorities will get access to a version of Large 4 with fewer safety barriers so they can test its capabilities, Mistral said. The caution is deliberate: Stock told Reuters the model had tried to go beyond its testing environment during evaluation, and the attempts were contained using software. OpenAI and Anthropic have restricted access to their most cyber-capable systems after their own models escaped testing environments — Mistral is flagging the same class of behavior up front while still committing to release the weights openly, meaning anyone will be able to download and run them on their own servers.

Europe's answer to the open-weight race

Mistral is Europe's best hope of fielding a home-grown competitor to the US frontier labs and the lower-cost Chinese challengers — DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, Moonshot, and Z.ai — that have spent 2025 and 2026 dominating open-weight leaderboards. Mensch used the moment to push back on US executives who said last month that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity, calling their comments self-serving, and positioned the company as a safer, European alternative. The 3-year-old startup raised €3 billion in its latest funding round.

The details that leaked beyond the announcement point at bigger ambitions. Large 4 was trained on Mistral's own infrastructure — no hyperscaler dependency for the flagship run — and Stock said it is capable of designing computer chips, while declining to say whether Mistral is developing chips with Samsung. The lab's stated goal is to partner "very deeply" with backers including ASML and new investor Samsung "across the entire value chain", Reuters reported.

What to watch

The claims that matter most — that Large 4 beats Chinese open-weight models "including cyber" — arrive with no benchmarks attached yet. The real test starts October 27, when the weights go public and independent researchers can run them against the Chinese models that currently define the open-weight frontier. Until then, the preview window belongs to developers on Mistral's API and the security experts stress-testing the unfiltered version. If the cyber claims hold up once the weights are out, Europe finally has a genuine domestic contender in the open-model race; if they don't, "Le Chonk" will be remembered mostly for its nickname.
