The rumor#

The entire claim traces back to a single source: a tweet from the leaker account @synthwavedd. From it, the rumor makes three assertions: (a) Anthropic's Opus 5.5 launch — which we covered on Tuesday — blindsided OpenAI; (b) OpenAI is compressing the GPT-6.1 Astra release timeline in response; and (c) the schedule shift indirectly brings "Bel," a rumored model supposedly capable of solving the Navier–Stokes equations, closer to release.

No second source has emerged. Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI has confirmed any of it. Everything below is the community's reaction to an unverified claim — which is itself the story.

Why the community believes it#

The thread's most-upvoted substantive comment argues Anthropic "ate OpenAI's lunch": OpenAI had been teasing a reset and "something major," and Anthropic dropped Opus 5.5 the same day — overshadowing OpenAI's own Sol 6 announcement, which, in the commenter's words, "landed with a thud" while Opus 5.5 got a great reception. Another highly-voted reply frames it as OpenAI preparing a modest release, internally called GPT 6 Terra, and being immediately undercut.

The anecdotal evidence piled up fast. One commenter described breaking a four-month Codex streak: Opus 5.5 "just works," with hugely improved writing quality, usable rate limits, and real visual creativity — and said they won't look back unless OpenAI beats it on code quality, communication, and prompt understanding. The original poster's most-upvoted reply joked that Dario Amodei "actually meant 'race' not 'pace' — honest mistake, promise," a jab at Anthropic's old "pace the frontier" rhetoric now that the lab is sprinting.

The skepticism#

The strongest pushback targets the source, not the story. One commenter argues the leaker is not an insider at all — just an enthusiast who started a Discord server about five months ago, never worked in the field, has no inside connections, and runs roughly 50/50 on predictions. Another grants the leaker is right about 80% of the time but notes they denied Astra existed until it was all but announced. Thin sourcing is thin sourcing, even when the crowd likes the conclusion.

The second line of skepticism is technical: a well-argued minority says Opus 5.5 matched the frontier rather than pushing it — "just much much cheaper."
