StepFun's Step 5 open weights landed after all: the 600B BF16 checkpoint is live on Hugging Face
StepFun’s open-weights deadline came and went this morning — and then the weights showed up. The official stepfun-ai/Step-5-Preview-BF16 repository on Hugging Face now carries the full release: 28 BF16 safetensor shards, tokenizer and config, a license, and inference code. The October 15 commitment was met on the day — hours after a same-day report pronounced it dead.
What landed this morning
As of 00:40 EDT, the repository lists 48 files. The payload: 28 safetensor shards — 24 base-model shards (model-00001 through model-00024), two MTP3 shards, a vision-encoder shard, and vit.safetensors — plus model.safetensors.index.json, tokenizer.json, config.json, special_tokens_map.json, chat_template.jinja, LICENSE.txt and LICENSE-CN.txt, and a full inference/ directory with convert.py, generate.py, vision_encoder.py, model.py, kernel.py, test scripts, and requirements.
The README confirms the headline specs: Step 5 Preview, 600B total parameters, ~27B active per token, up to 1M-token context — StepFun’s flagship agentic model, multimodal across text, image, and video. Badges in the README link an FP8 build and ModelScope mirrors alongside the BF16 repo. The repository was created September 20 as a stub; its metadata shows the update at 01:31:42 UTC today — the files landed in the small hours of the deadline day, still the evening of October 14 on the US East Coast.

The false obituary
At 2:27 AM UTC today, Forkast News published a piece declaring the miss: its 1:55Z probe had found the repository returning a 404, the license absent, and only the API preview real — with third-party conversions from SHSLab and rene98c filling the vacuum, unendorsed by the lab. The repository’s own metadata tells a less dramatic story: the 01:31:42Z update timestamp means the BF16 files were landing around the time Forkast was checking, and a half-uploaded repository can easily answer 404. By the time anyone reads this, the obituary is the artifact and the weights are the news. The vendor-promised date held.
The license, decoded
The license file is not a placeholder. StepFun Model License 1.0 grants perpetual, worldwide, no-charge rights to use, copy, distribute, sublicense, and modify the model — with derivative works explicitly defined to include fine-tuned, distilled, merged, quantized, pruned, and continually pre-trained variants. It carries a patent grant that terminates if you sue over patent infringement, and one commercial tripwire: cross 100 million monthly active users or $20M in revenue and you must display “Powered by StepFun AI.” One clause worth reading twice: a model trained “to a material extent” on Step 5’s outputs counts as a derivative work — a quiet guardrail against distilling it into a competitor.

The catch: you need a cluster
Full BF16 precision on 600 billion parameters is roughly 1.2TB of weights — Forkast’s estimate is that inference wants about eight H100 80GB cards. That puts the raw checkpoint out of reach for nearly everyone; the real audience is labs, cloud providers, and the quantizers. Community builds were already circulating — a third-party GGUF conversion logged around 2,000 downloads in eight days this month, per orcarouter’s check — and with the official FP8 repo already linked from the README, sanctioned smaller builds are the obvious next shoe to drop.
Why it matters
Step 5 Preview is the model StepFun launched September 20 with the API live from day one at $1 per million input tokens and $2.70 per million output — aimed at agentic software engineering, professional knowledge work, and finance. Third-party tracker Artificial Analysis scores it 44 on its Intelligence Index, level with Kimi K3 Max and Grok 4.6 (independently unverified). The weights drop closes the launch loop: a frontier-class agentic model that can now be self-hosted, fine-tuned, and distilled — with the license explicitly permitting all three. In a year of slipped vendor dates, the notable detail may be that this one held.
