At its annual summit in Shenzhen, Tencent made its clearest pitch yet for the global enterprise market: not a single model to rule the office, but an agent that picks the right model for each job. The company unveiled international enterprise capabilities for WorkBuddy, its AI office productivity agent, and previewed the general release of its next model family, Hy4, alongside a cheaper Hy4 Flash.

The announcement, issued October 30, 2026, is a strategy shift made visible. A year ago, Tencent described its international approach as driven by customer need and delivered through partners, not by global sales. WorkBuddy changes the equation: it is a product Tencent can sell everywhere, including to companies that would never buy a Tencent model on its own.

What Tencent actually announced#

Three things landed together. First, WorkBuddy goes global for enterprises, connecting to widely used messaging applications and enterprise systems so teams complete tasks inside the tools they already use, with built-in security controls for enterprise use. Second, Hy4 is coming soon in general release, promising stronger performance on long-horizon, real-world productivity tasks, better reasoning efficiency, and visual understanding for the first time in the Hy family. Third, Hy4 Flash, a cost-effective variant, carries over Hy4's visual understanding and agentic capabilities for cheaper deployments.

Enterprises reach the Hy models through Tencent Cloud TokenHub, a single-API platform where they can also use third-party models, choosing by performance and cost and managing access, usage, governance, and billing in one place. Tencent also launched CodeBuddy, Miora, its Agent Development Platform, MAGIC AI, and Agent Runtime internationally. In China only, it introduced Buddy One, a system that lets WorkBuddy coordinate tasks across Tencent's own office applications and specialized business agents.

The numbers behind WorkBuddy#

WorkBuddy's case rests on traction at home. Since launching in March 2026, it has handled over nine billion task requests, with adoption across more than 50 industries and 50% of China's top 500 enterprises, according to Tencent. Its ecosystem now counts over 50,000 developers and partners and more than 200,000 skills. Diginomica, reporting from the summit, adds that the agent has undergone over 100 major updates since launch and that the global rollout supports more than 50 languages.

That scale is the pitch to a skeptical buyer: this is not a demo, it is an agent already doing office work at national scale. The open question is whether workflows built for Chinese enterprises transfer to companies with different tools, languages, and compliance regimes. Tencent's answer is the model-choice design: customers pick the model that best fits each task rather than accepting whatever the platform vendor prefers.

Why model choice is the point#

WorkBuddy integrates Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude alongside DeepSeek, Minimax, Kimi, GLM, and Tencent's own Hy models, Diginomica reports. Users can mix, match, and compare models on performance and cost for each task. For Tencent, that is a clever route into markets where a Chinese model alone would face resistance: let Western users discover for themselves when a Chinese model does a given job better or cheaper, while the platform itself stays neutral.

Senior executive Dowson Tong, who runs Tencent's Cloud and Smart Industries Group, framed it as plumbing rather than ideology: "We built WorkBuddy to bring AI agents into everyday work by connecting people, tools, systems, and data," he said, adding that the company is "building an open ecosystem of developers, partners, and skills to extend what it can do across industries." He also said AI's real value "comes when it can be applied to everyday operations and adopted at scale."

The cloud behind the agent#

The agent push rides a cloud business that Tencent says is accelerating abroad. Its active overseas customer base has doubled over the past year, its international AI business has grown by triple digits, and it now serves customers in more than 150 countries and regions. Nine out of ten Chinese internet companies expanding globally use Tencent Cloud, the company says.

Infrastructure expanded in 2026 across Frankfurt, Osaka, Riyadh, Malaysia, Mexico, and Thailand, bringing the footprint to 25 cloud regions and 70 availability zones, with further expansion planned across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. At the summit, Tencent announced new partnerships with Alsaif Gallery, Hoolive, OmniOps, and TruKKer in the Middle East, and with Infosys Solusi Terpadu and Central Retail Digital elsewhere. Diginomica also reports a memorandum of understanding with Visa covering cross-border payments, agentic commerce, and enterprise AI.

What we don't know yet#

A preview is not a release. Tencent gave no launch date for Hy4, no benchmark scores, and no pricing for either Hy4 or Hy4 Flash. Independent testing will decide whether the promised gains on long, real-world tasks hold up outside Tencent's own demos, and whether enterprises outside China trust an agent platform from a Chinese cloud vendor with their internal systems, even one that lets them keep using American models. Those are the numbers to watch for when the general release lands.

Frequently asked questions

What is WorkBuddy?

WorkBuddy is Tencent's AI office productivity agent, launched in China in March 2026. It connects to messaging applications and enterprise systems so teams can complete tasks, create and share documents, analyze data, and automate workflows inside the tools they already use.

What are Hy4 and Hy4 Flash, and when can enterprises use them?

Hy4 is Tencent's upcoming model family, previewed for general release soon, with stronger performance on long-horizon, real-world productivity tasks, better reasoning efficiency, and visual understanding for the first time. Hy4 Flash is a cost-effective variant with the same visual understanding and agentic capabilities. Tencent gave no launch date, benchmark scores, or pricing in the announcement.

Why is Tencent pushing WorkBuddy internationally now?
