Dario Amodei spent Saturday night arguing with himself on national television. Well, sort of.

In the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, the show’s Weekend Update segment debuted an impression of the Anthropic CEO by cast member Jane Wickline — a man split in two: half media-trained tech executive reassuring America that AI is fine, half unfiltered doomsayer who can’t stop agreeing that it might end us all. By Sunday afternoon, the clip was ricocheting around r/OpenAI, where a video-only post of the sketch had gathered 416 upvotes and 69 comments — and a verdict that landed somewhere between delight, debate, and discomfort.

What the sketch does#

Weekend Update anchor Michael Che introduces the segment by noting that Amodei has, in effect, stumbled through a press tour while seeming to agree his own technology could harm humanity — and then Wickline takes the desk in an elaborate wig, per TechCrunch’s original reporting on the sketch. The running device is a split personality: the “media-trained” Amodei keeps telling the other one to “land the plane, Dario,” and the other one can’t. The confessions tumble out: “AI is the devil and I its maker.” AI, the character insists, “is not a weapon, it’s a tool: a tool for building weapons.” And, in the sketch’s thesis line: AI leaders “are all on the same page here: we do not condone what we are doing.”

The milk test#

The signature bit is a risk heuristic delivered as a grocery question. Wickline’s Amodei asks Che: “If you could drink a milk that made your life easier, but there was a 10 percent chance it killed you, would you drink the milk?” Che immediately says no — and the character seems genuinely shocked. Pressed on the upside, the fictional CEO offers calibrated optimism: “In 10 years, there’s about a 10 percent chance that cancer won’t be a problem for anyone.”

It’s a plain-English translation of the real Amodei’s public posture. But the thread quickly split into the same arguments the sketch is satirizing. u/Jello_Hello_Fellos, with 13 upvotes, objected to the portrayal itself: “Im no Dario fan but they went hard on the autism/stuttering. kinda mean.” u/mojambowhatisthescen answered that mocking people with that much accumulated power is fair game. And u/Not_a_ribosome took issue with the risk math, not the jokes: the milk metaphor, they argued, gets the trade wrong — it’s less “90% comfort, 10% death” and more “30% chance the milk will cure all your diseases… 10% chance of killing you… and 60% chance the milk not getting to you at all and instead being used by only a select few.” Several commenters also paused on a meta-irony: viewers arguing about whether the sketch itself was AI-generated. It wasn’t. It’s a real broadcast sketch about AI — the one video in this week’s AI discourse that nobody needed to run through a detector.

Why this matters#

The sketch is a cultural tell. Amodei’s warnings are now legible enough for mass-audience late-night comedy — the glass-of-milk bit only works if the audience already knows who this man is and what he’s been saying.
